Abstract

Acupuncture is an ancient therapy, part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which aims to maintain  and promote health through stimuli in certain energy points of the body. This literature review  aims to show the use of acupuncture in Dentistry and its benefits in the treatment of  Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). For the study, scientific articles, books and magazines that  approached the topic impartially and based on the literature were reviewed. Considering the  recent interest of Dentistry in integrative therapies, the indication of acupuncture for the treatment  of TMD has been shown to be effective, since TMD has a multifactorial etiology, and can be of  odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin. The individual may present symptoms such as pain in  the masticatory muscles, in the temporomandibular joint, limitation of jaw movements, joint  noises, tinnitus and headaches. In addition, the observation of parafunctional habits is common,  and psychosocial factors may contribute to the causes of this dysfunction. It was concluded that acupuncture brings benefits to the patient in the treatment of TMD, in addition to returning energy harmony and leading to a state of analgesia.
