Abstract

Lipedema is a chronic condition, frequently underdiagnosed and often mistakenly confused with obesity, characterized by the symmetrical and disproportionate deposition of adipose tissue, especially in the lower limbs. This condition is associated with persistent pain, functional limitation, and significant psychosocial impact, substantially compromising patients’ quality of life. Objective: to identify, in the literature, the main diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to lipedema, highlighting the role of multiprofessional care and its implications for the organization of health care. Method: this is an integrative literature review conducted with the purpose of synthesizing scientific evidence and supporting clinical practice. The search was carried out in national and international databases, including studies published between 2020 and 2025 that addressed diagnostic, therapeutic, nutritional, physiotherapeutic, and psychosocial aspects of lipedema. The selected studies were analyzed critically and systematically. Results: the findings show that the diagnosis of lipedema is predominantly clinical and still marked by challenges, which contributes to delays in the initiation of treatment. Therapeutic management proved to be essentially conservative and multiprofessional, integrating interventions such as individualized nutritional guidance, compression therapies, lymphatic drainage, physical exercise, and physiotherapy, with positive impacts on pain, limb volume, and quality of life. In selected cases, tumescent liposuction was described as a complementary strategy, especially when associated with a continuous rehabilitation plan. A significant psychosocial impact was also observed, characterized by stigmatization, emotional distress, and impairment of functionality. Conclusion: lipedema imposes a relevant physical, emotional, and social burden, requiring a structured and integrated response from health systems. Early diagnosis and the organization of multiprofessional care are decisive in minimizing suffering and optimizing clinical outcomes. The need for continuous training of health professionals, strengthening of primary care, and implementation of multiprofessional, humanized, and patient-centered care protocols is emphasized, aiming to improve quality of life.
